Why I started Ritmo
"Ritmo" is the Spanish word for "rhythm' or 'flow'. Rhythm lies at the heart of both Spanish football and language learning. In football, the Spanish game is built on tempo, movement, timing and fluid passing — the constant rhythm of players moving together in harmony, keeping possession and controlling the pace of the game. In language learning, rhythm is equally important: listening, speaking and understanding the natural flow of conversation, expression and cultural connection. Great communication, like great football, depends on confidence, timing and instinct developed through immersion and repetition. Ritmo is built around movement, connection, energy and learning through real experience.
Ritmo was born from two lifelong passions of mine: sport and languages. Some of the most formative experiences of my life came not from classrooms, but from living abroad, playing team sport, meeting new people and learning to communicate across cultures. Today, too many young people experience language learning as something abstract and academic, while football is often reduced to commercialised camps with little personal development. I wanted to create something different — an experience that builds confidence, curiosity, friendship and independence through the shared rhythm of football, language and real cultural immersion.
Our ambition is not simply to help children become better footballers or improve their Spanish.
We want them to become more confident, more independent, more curious and more internationally minded.
About me
I am a Cambridge University graduate with a first class degree in Spanish and French. As part of my studies, I had an exchange student during my A-levels, lived with three Spanish flatmates during my year abroad and on a Spanish campsite in my gap year. All of these deeply immersed me in the language and the culture, fuelling my love of Spanish, my confidence, my appreciation of cultural differences and accelerating my learning.
"My other life-long passion is football. I've played in 11 a side and 7 a side teams for nearly 40 years and am now a youth coach at a primary school and a Sunday league youth club.
I'm also a dad of two boys, both of whom live to play football and love learning languages. As a coach of my youngest son's team I know what it takes to motivate and inspire young people and how to teach the beautiful game"
Why Does Ritmo Academy Exist?
Over the past two decades, language learning among young people in the UK has been in steady decline.
Fewer students are studying foreign languages and opportunities for cultural exchange and international experiences have become increasingly limited.
Yet we live in a global society where speaking another language, understanding different cultures and feeling comfortable in international environments are invaluable life skills.
